Over Fishing:

Back

Over Fishing means that human beings are taking too many of certain kinds of fish out of the water for food. The kind that people like to eat. Like cod, for example, the fish which gives Cape Cod its name. In the past, ships took so much cod out of the water that there were not enough left to keep the species going. When this happens, scientists say the fishery collapsed. The cod fishery collapsed in the mid 90's and now one third of the area we are studying is closed to commercial fishing to give the cod time to recover. Our data shows there are far fewer cod now than there were in the past.
