    A Mystery

Dr. Joseph Kunkel from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst is investigating a mystery on board our ship. In the last few years, fisherman and biologists have all noticed that lobsters are disappearing from waters south of cape cod near shore. This includes Narragansett Bay and our own Long Island Sound. Why? Thats' what Dr. Kunkel is trying to find out.
He and other scientists have found that the lobsters are infected with a bacteria. Dr. Kunkel has a hypothesis. He believes that some lobsters get the bacteria because their shells are not as strong as other lobsters and don't protect them as well. He is here collecting samples to test his hypothesis.

Here is Doctor Kunkel collecting samples with Watch Chief Mel Underwood.
He has even made a discovery. He and another scientist, named Dr. Jercinovic, discovered that this shell fish actually has boney material in certain places in the shell. The boney material helps make the lobster strong enough to resist the bacteria. Effected lobsters may not have as much bone, so their shells are weaker. Why are the shells weaker? There may be a few reasons.
The water South of Cape Cod is warmer than it normally is. Climate change may be to blame.
The water has a lot of pollution from cities like New York and Boston.
There are many streams and rivers pouring into the area that are Affected by acid rain.
All of these things may effect the lobsters in the sea. They may effect other creatures in the sea as well. Can you think of things that are happening in our neighborhood that may contribute to this problem? Post your ideas on the blog and I will share them with Dr. Kunkel. What does shell disease look like? Can you see the red spots on the photo on the right? That is shell disease. It can get much worse. Thanks Dr. Kunkel for sharing your work and your photograph.

The art teachers, Mrs. Bensen in CLE and Mrs. Piteo in WOS had groups of students decorate Styrofoam cups for an experiment on the ship involving technology, water pressure in science and perspective in art. You probably have felt water pressure. When you swim to the bottom of the deep end of a pool, you may have felt your ears pop. This is water pressure. It is caused by the weight of the water on top of you pushing down on you. Well, a pool is only 10 or 12 feet deep. Just imagine the pressure at 600 feet down. We wanted to do an experiment with water pressure. Since Styrofoam is has a lot of air in it, we wanted to see what happened when we sent the decorated cups to the bottom of the sea. Click here for a video and see for yourself. If you decorated a cup, you will get it back when I come in next week.

Here are some more interesting creatures that came up in our nets overnight. We have been in deeper water and some some of the creatures have been quite interesting.

This “sea pen” is a type of soft coral.

This is a sea-hag. It is a snake-like fish that has some amazing teeth. We put one inside a plastic bag for a few minutes to watch it try to eat its way out. Take a look at this video to see what happened.

Here are three Spoon Arm Octopi. Each octopi has three hearts, not one. One pumps blood through the body and the other two pump blood through the gills. There are three octopi in this photo. How many hearts to they have in all?

This redfish are also an interesting criters. When they lay eggs, you can see the babies inside. They live in deep water. We caught this one at a depth of 300 meters. How many feet is that?

Here is a bobtail squid and a sea-start. The squid looks like an octopus, but it is not.

This skate case had a baby skate inside. Here is what it looked like as the tiny creature emerged.

Finally, the red on the underside of this crab are the eggs. Biologists call them roe.

Zee and Snuggy paid a visit to the ship's hospital to take a look around. Here is a photo. The hospital is amazing. They are able to treat a wide variety of injuries and ailments without having to call for help. They can even put in stiches if they need to. In cases of serious injury, however, the Coast Guard would have to take the patient to land with the helicopter or fast boat. Zee and Snuggy had a great time touring the hospital, and all three of us are just fine.

Hi!! How is it on the boat?? Are you getting a little sick cause this might make you really sick!! This might really gross people out and maybe even you but Korean people (like me) eat the crab's roe. But it really taste good! Sorry if you are getting sick right now but I just wanted to let you know. (Thats why I asked if you are getting a little sick.) I hope to you catch more weird fish!!

    Dear mr.Tanenbaum,

I hope you are having a great time at sea. Almost the whole class said the styrofoam would expand. I was not sure because the styrafoam had air but there is alot of water pressure under 300 meters. The cups that did not go under water looked so big compared to the ones that did. Every one was suprised when you pulled out the crushed cups. Once again i hope you have a great time.

    Dear MR.t
Hellow i saw the vidios about the cups i thought they would get bigger. You should get a fish tank and get the babby fish egg and see if it hacthes.Hope you have a good time.

    Dear Mr. T,
I the losbsters are getting red spots on them because it is probably because water is getting warmer.I dont think there is a wayto fix itpably to deep so the farther down the water goes the warmer it gets.

Dear Mr Tanenbaum we learned that Dr Joseph Kunkels on the boat with you trying to find out why the lobsters have bacteria and why there aren't as many. I think that it is becauseof pulition.

Today we watched a video where you used a quadrant to find your location. I liked watching the sea eggs. The animal that I liked was the skate. I hope you are having a great time on your ship.

Dear Mr.T, the quadrant is so old how did they think of inventing it.I hope you catch more fish! How is it on the boat did you get sea sick yet. Hope you have a great trip!!!

    Dear Mrs.Tanenbaum,
I like the stiraphone cup experiment and the cool video. Those eel things were cool!!!!

    Dear Mr T.

How did you get the doctor. Joesph Kunkel? Does he have any clue about what is happening? Are they regular lobster or are they different kinds of lobsters? It's really cool that you got a doctor on the ship to help and see whats wrong with the lobsters. What has he found out so far? Did he find anything yet? I really want to know because I like to eat lobster. And if he doesn't find out whats wrong then me and my family won't be able to eat what we want to eat. Eating is important in lives, or we could die. I don't want to die. I'm not saying that I only eat lobster but I like to eat it.

    Dear Mr. Tanenbaum,

I loved your exprament on the styrofoam cups it really amazed me. And another thing that was very surprising is the bits of bactiria on the lobsters. My idea is to make a slogan on not polluting. It could really make the climate of the water stay the same. A couple of questions if you are not to busy if a person went down into the ocean with no gear on would they get crushed like the cups?

    scincerly C.S.

    Dear Mr.T

Did the sea hags freak you out? Well they didn't freak me out. How many feet did you have to fish to catch them. How long do the sea hags live for i bet they live for fourty years. Are they meat eaters or do they just eat seaweed.

    Hi Mr.T

When you asked the qustion about how much is 300 meters i found the answer it is 984. feet

You asked how people in OUR area might be contributing to ocean pollution. Here are our ideas:
1)Factories, car, trucks, boats, trains and planes all cause air pollution. The chemicals that go into the air collect on raindrops. The raindrops fall into waterways that lead to the ocean, and of course it rains on the ocean. So air pollution creates ocean pollution.

2)Soil pollution is caused by people putting chemicals on their plants and into the soil. The rain washes it into streams that eventually flow into the ocean. So soil pollution causes ocean pollution.

3)People in our area sometimes throw trash in the street. It gets washed into drains that empty into the ocean. Trash in the water can cause trouble. In addition to animals eating it, the chemicals used to make the container or color the container can break down in the water. Trash can cause ocean pollution.

We wonder if any of these actions are causing the lobster shells to be softer.

Hi Mr. Tanenbaum. Mrs. Beglin's class just watched your experiment with styrofoam cups and water pressure. Mrs. B's class was excited knowing that their school had been able to participate in such an intresting activity. We discussed the possible outcomes. Would the air in the cups cause them to expand or would the pressure from the water cause them to contract? Most students believed correctly that the weight from the water would squeeze out the air and the cups would shrink in size. Smart kids. We also took a tour of your ship. J. wants to grow up to do experiments on ships in the ocean too!! I don't blame him. See you soon Mr. T.

    Dear Mr.T

How is your trip so far? I cant wait until you come back. I thought the styrofoam cup experiment was soooo cool. I have a conection with the styrofoam cup experiment. I went to a science fair, and there was one station where you take a styrofom cup and color it. Then there is this big tub of water and it strinks. It was so interesting. See you soon!

    Dear mr.t,

Whats up over there! It was sooo cool the way you put the styrafoam cups put it down at the buttom of the sea and made an exsperiment on if the cups would get crushed or exspand. And boy, those little guys got crushed with all of that water presher. I can't belive what mircals are down under the sea. The most stargest creatures are down their. Some of them even scare me!! I miss you at sea and so does my friend typing right next to me.

Have fun and keep talking to us on line.
